The Fullerton Chamber of Commerce has named Hilda Sugarman, Vice President, Fullerton School District Board of Trustees , as 2011 Educator of the Year, and awarded John Link, Principal, La Sierra/La Vista High Schools, a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Fullerton Chamber of Commerce has named Hilda Sugarman, Vice President, Fullerton School District Board of Trustees , as 2011 Educator of the Year, and awarded John Link, Principal, La Sierra/La Vista High Schools, a Lifetime Achievement Award. Sugarman and Link will be presented the prestigious awards at the Chamber’s Annual Salute to Education, on Friday, May 27, at Fullerton College, located at 321 E. Chapman Ave. The luncheon will also honor three Young Citizens of the Year, receiving $1,000 scholarships.
Sugarman has been serving the Fullerton community as a Fullerton School District Trustee for 14 years. She has been president of the board four times and is currently serving as Vice President. She also sits on the Orange County School Board Association. She was a founding member of the Fullerton Excellence in Education (now Fullerton Technology Foundation) and has served as President the past six years.
“Under her guidance and leadership, the foundation has been able to contribute over $800,000 toward technology needs. Hilda was also instrumental in securing a $250,000 endowment for the foundation that will be used over the next several years to continue the foundation’s mission,” said John Straser, Senior Vice President, Fullerton Community Bank.
Dr. Milton Gordon, President, California State University, Fullerton, explains, “Hilda Sugarman has been the most effective advocate I know for our Fullerton schools-elementary, secondary, and high education. Through her leadership on the Fullerton School District Board and other committees over the past 25 years, she has improved community members’ understanding of our schools, lobbied for sufficient state funds so all levels of schools can provide the very best possible education for the students we serve. She listens with an open mind and makes the system better because of it. She is the most deserving of the Educator of the Year Award for her significant contributions to our Fullerton Schools.”
Hilda Sugarman’s nomination included additional recommendations from Janny Meyer, Board of Trustees, Fullerton School District; Dr. Mitch Hovey, Superintendent, Fullerton School District; Minard Duncan, Former Board of Trustee, Fullerton School District; Susan Mercado, Principal, Maple Elementary School; Cheryl Lee, Development Executive, Apple Inc.; Dr. Sueling Chen, Principal, Arborland Montessori Children’s Academy; and Janet Morey, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, Fullerton School District.
“Perhaps no other individual has had a move positive impact on improving the quality of educational programs for more students in the Fullerton Joint Union High School District over the past five years as John Link,” explained George Giokaris, Ed.D., Superintendent of Fullerton Joint Union High School District.
Lifetime Achievement honoree John Link currently serves as the principal of both La Vista and La Sierra High Schools, and after 26 years, will be retiring at the end of this year. During his tenure, he has been actively involved in the Needlework Guild of Fullerton, Fullerton Assistance League, Fullerton Sunrise Rotary, Fullerton Police Department School Resource Program, Crittenton Services for Children & Families, Cal-Safe, Project Safe, Community Challenge GOALS grant program, and more.
Link has taken the vision of the Board of Trustees and Superintendent and led the innovative work to redesign, renew, and reenergize alternative and continuing education in the district.
Link has expanded the opportunity programs from over 100 students five years ago to over 500 students for the most at risk ninth and tenth grade students in 2009/10, which lead to retaining the students in the classroom and preventing drop outs.
“Mr. Link has worked tirelessly to create specific and individualized educational programs and pathways in an effort to provide alternative educational environment where all can be successful,” explained Corporal Tim Kandler, Fullerton Police Department School Resource Officer.
Since 1979, the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce has been recognizing outstanding individuals who have made a difference in the education of young people with the honor of Educator of the Year. The esteemed award is selected through specific criteria, including community involvement, ethics, service, innovation, and leadership.
